We’ve done nothing but practice since Nationals, with the exception of the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concerts, so to Feilding we went.
This year the Wellington District Brass Band Association and the Central Districts Brass Band Association have decided to combine their regional Band Contests. This was a ‘trial’ of the combined format to see if the format works for all and proves to be more entertaining for the general audience.
As there were twice the number of bands attending, fourteen in total, the contest was run over Saturday and Sunday and even, to the horror of the Bass section, included a Street March.
The more traditional contest aspect on Saturday included the ‘Hymn or Sacred Item’ and ‘Own Choice Selection’ similar to the ‘Hymn and Test’ aspect of the National Contest format, on Sunday however, the bands ‘let their hair down’ (well, those that have hair) with a 25 minute ‘Concert Programme’ aimed at audience appreciation and popularity, and of course the ‘Street March’.
Our band played exceptionally well on the day, a couple of slips (but hardly noticeable) and came away with a third placing this year behind ‘Brass Wanganui’ and ‘Pelorus Trust Wellington Brass’, both of whom pulled out all the stops and performed extremely well.
The band would like to acknowledge the assistance of ‘Kitchen Studio – North City’ for kindly allowing us the use of their truck to transport our ‘kitchen’ department (Percussion) up to Feilding this weekend. Please help us thank them, contact options are available on our ‘affiliates’ page.
